Project: Develop funky new food trucks.
The challenge: Designing a kitchen to fit within such a little truck and still ensuring that it meets all the required certifications.
The outcome:
Making hamburgers for hungry customers may seem like a simple proposition. That is until you decide that you want to take your food to the masses, rather than have them come to you. Mr Burger wanted to be at the forefront of food vans in the Melbourne market. However, expertise to deliver these “little” projects was scarce. Enter Switch and Director James Harris in July 2012, who took the attitude of “how hard can it be?”, and thus the design of a fleet of Mr Burger trucks was underway.
The initial wave involved the design and construction of five food trucks. The process required understanding requirements for food hygiene and other Australian Standards, Energy Safe Victoria requirements, as well as safety requirements for the vehicles whilst in transit between locations AND when delivering the service at various locations.
Mr Burger vans mark 1 were delivered in October 2012, just 3 months after getting some sketches underway.
Their success was instantaneous – and soon there were calls to add to the fleet. This time Project Manager Hugh James was called upon to deliver the next batch. This time, another five vans with a project programme spanning 12 weeks. There were improvements to be incorporated and a tight budget to manage. Fortunately, Hugh’s skill in balancing requirements came to the fore and the vans were in service, providing the best burgers in Melbourne to happy customers by Early January 2015.
